History of Sterling
Sterling has been in business since 1958, and is based in Bellingham, Washington. In 1999, Sterling contracted with its sister company, Olympic Health Management Systems, Inc. to enter the Medicare market.
Sterling was the first insurance company to successfully form a contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This newly authorized Medicare plan was known as Private-Fee-for-Service (PFFS). Sterling was also the first insurance company to allow its policy holders to move from one health plan to another when their needs changed, without extra underwriting.
