Humana, Inc. is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky and is one of the premier insurance companies in the United States. History of Humana

Humana,originally known as Extendicare, began in Louisville, Kentucky in 1961 as a nursing home company. Experiencing quick success, it transitioned from the nursing home industry in 1972 when it began purchasing hospitals. Humana experienced tremendous growth during the 1970s, opening about one hospital per month.

In the early 1990s, Humana transitioned from hospital operations to health benefits. It began marketing health insurance products in 1993 and quickly evolved to become one of the nation's top health insurance providers by the late 1990s.

Humana currently offers a variety of health insurance plans and benefits. It specializes in offering coverage to Medicare recipients, individuals, and employers.
